HOW TO SET THE XXL RAT TRAP
Following these steps will improve your rat catching success rate
Step 1 Preparation
Rats are smart and can detect human scent so it is essential you wear disposable gloves when handling the rat trap. Rat Reaper XXL is supplied with 2 pairs of gloves. You can also use other types like rubber washing up gloves or the latex type used for food preparation. It is also essential to where gloves when emptying the trap to protect yourself from any disease the rodent might have. If like me you've probably opened the box and started fiddling with the trap before reading the instructions, in which case wash the trap off with water or leave in fresh air for 24 hours to dissipate the human scent.
Step 2 - What Food is Irresistible to Rats?
We recommend using peanut butter this is because rats primarily eat seeds, cereals and nuts. If you have a bird feeder the rats are probably already feeding from the seed which drops to the floor. The key to success is not overloading the bait pod, you really only need a small amount. Fill the bait pod to the top using a kitchen knife or spoon, if you are using peanut butter you can place a few seeds in top as as special treat. You can also use other baits like meats, chocolate and even Nutella.
Step 3 - How do you Catch a Smart Rat?
Rats are extremely cautious of anything new in their environment and this includes traps. It can take days for a rat to become familiar with new objects and can then take more time for them to actually take the bait. We know you want to catch the rat ASAP but a little patience will pay off. First find the best location for the rat trap, remember this is an open trap so you don't want to place it where pets or children can access it. Rats use their whiskers at night and like to travel along walls so positioning the trap along outside walls or indoor skirting boards is perfect. Leave the trap in position WITHOUT BAIT AND UNSET for a couple of days. The rat will become familiar with the trap and see it as no threat.
Step 4 - Setting the Trap
Using the previous tips your rat trap should already be in position. Wear your gloves and make sure the trap is in the unset position (the red bar should be sitting flat on the trap) to ensure you don't activate the trap on your fingers. Fill the bait pod with a small amount of peanut butter, do not overfill the rat can smell the bait and you want to make it hard to get. Reposition the trap and press down on the metal bar at the back using your hand (in gloves). The trap is now fully set and ready for action. Remember the rat already have a food source somewhere so this could take a couple of days, check the trap each morning.
Step 5 - Advanced Technique for Extra Large Rats
The large rat didn't get that big without dodging a few bullets. This super smart rodent has played the game and could well treat your new trap like a toy by pushing it around or flipping it over. Rat Reaper XXL has 2 holes at the rear of the trap allowing you to screw the trap to flat surface ie. block of wood. This will prevent the trap from being moved and will increase the velocity of the snap when triggered.
